Lloyds River Nature Reserve

NCC’s Lloyds River Nature Reserve is a 880-hectare (2,174-acre) expanse of boreal forest bordering Lloyds River in the interior of the Island of Newfoundland. This diverse landscape includes open peatlands, barren habitat and forest of balsam fir and black spruce, with stands of mature white pine. This remote forest environment provides habitat for many species of wildlife, including Newfoundland marten, black bear, Canada lynx and the iconic woodland caribou. Many provincially-rare plants thrive here, including mad-dog skullcap.

The Lloyds River Nature Reserve was acquired through a partnership with Abitibi Consolidated in 2003. It was the first Ecological Gift in Newfoundland and Labrador. Given the remote location of this property, NCC’s stewardship strategy includes partnering with local residents who use the area.
