Mark your calendars: June 5 is World Environment Day!
Are you ready to celebrate? I hope so, because this year Canada is hosting World Environment Day on June 5, 2017, with UN Environment, and it is going to be fun!
World Environment Day is an opportunity for all of us to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of natural spaces and species. This year’s theme is Connecting People to Nature, which is a perfect fit for the work of land trusts and private land conservation groups around the world such as the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC).
There are many easy ways for you to help showcase the work of your organization, and the volunteers who contribute their time for nature, on a global stage! Through the World Environment Day website, you can register an event, join an event or create your own way of sharing the amazing work you do.
I’m really excited about one particular activity being promoted by the United Nations for World Environment Day: the world’s biggest nature photo album challenge! This is where people from around the world post pictures of their favourite places in nature using the hashtag #WithNature.
As a member of the conservation community and a Canadian, I’m issuing you a challenge: let’s have every land trust post a picture or video and story about the natural spaces we help protect! Add #LandTrust and we’ll be able to stay connected!
I can’t wait to see your pictures and learn about the creative, inspiring, exciting work you do! Check out the World Environment Day website for more ways to join the party.
