A plan to restore the lands under our care

Healthy ecosystems are vital to both the health of humans and the planet. Viable ecosystems are not just the plants and animals that we see, but also what lies beneath our feet: the soil and microbes. From the food on our tables to our mental health and well-being, nature provides us with myriad services that are both essential and largely undervalued.

Ecosystem restoration in our country plays an important role in addressing the twin crises of rapid biodiversity loss and climate change, meeting global climate goals and improving human well-being.

Restoration Framework

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has created a Restoration Framework — a guide to caring for ecosystems in support of a thriving world for nature and for people. The framework’s guiding principles aim to ensure effective, efficient, engaging and equitable ecological restoration practices. NCC undertakes ecological restoration to support the recovery of biodiversity, support (re)connection between people and nature, and respond to climate change, today and over the long-term. Restoration activities are taking place in places where these actions will make the greatest contribution to resilient landscapes.

With support from TD Bank Group, NCC has begun implementing the framework and focusing on operationalizing high-level restoration direction, including the development of guidelines, standards and training for staff.

Operationalizing the Restoration Framework: Restoration projects

With support from TD, through its corporate citizenship platform, the TD Ready Commitment, NCC has implemented the Restoration Framework on projects in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. These projects support landscape restoration goals in each region and are aligned with NCC’s conservation vision. NCC’s implementation of the Restoration Framework and its guiding principles to restore Canadian ecosystems continues.
