Grant McPhail grew up in Brandon, Manitoba. He attended the University of Manitoba and graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's of commerce (honours) degree, majoring in marketing and corporate finance.
Grant worked in Tokyo, Japan, in 1976 teaching bankers and commodity traders. After returning to Canada, he worked for two years in an international trading company (Interimco) in Ottawa, before moving to Winnipeg and spending six years as a commodities trader and stockbroker. He moved into the insurance and financial advisory business in 1985 with London Life, and attained his CFP, CLU, CHFC and GBA and left London Life in 1999. Grant worked with MGI Financial (formally Rice Financial) since 2000 in various positions, including senior branch advisor and senior vice-president of employee benefits. In 2010, he became an independant advisor, brokering through Desjardins Financial Security Inc. Grant is now retired.
In Brandon, Grant was president of the YMCA, chair of the Brandon Economic Development Board, president of the Brandon Life Underwriters Association, and a board member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Wheatbelt Community Futures. He is an avid sportsman.
Grant's wife, Dale Severyn, is an education consultant in early literacy and a past president of the Brandon University Foundation and the recipient of the Apex Award. They have two sons, Cameron and Andrew.
