Françoise Roy to lead Nature Conservancy of Canada in Atlantic provinces

October 9, 2024
Fredericton, NB

Canada's largest conservation organization has a new leader in Atlantic Canada. Françoise Roy has become the regional vice-president of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in the Atlantic provinces.

Roy has joined the not-for-profit charity following a thorough recruitment process.

She brings a wealth of leadership experience in the not-for-profit, public and private sectors and says “Growing up among the stunning landscapes of New Brunswick, I have always cherished our region’s natural beauty. I am excited to be part of a community that shares this passion.”

Roy has over 30 years of experience in strategic planning, fundraising, advocacy and stakeholder engagement. Prior to joining NCC, she led her own leadership development practice, including immersing clients in the natural environment to enable them to achieve their goals. Her extensive leadership experience also includes serving as vice-president of communications, marketing and community at UNI Financial Cooperation; deputy minister of New Brunswick’s Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture with responsibilities for provincial parks; and executive director of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute.

A resident of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and a lifelong hiker, cyclist, paddler and nature lover, Roy is deeply familiar with the forests and waterways of Eastern Canada. She is well suited to collaborating with NCC’s partners to implement solutions and conserve the Atlantic region’s most important natural areas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Université de Moncton and is an active member of community groups, such as YWCA Moncton, and has served on the national board of Save the Children Canada. She has also participated in a humanitarian mission to Haiti with the charity Right To Play.

“We are pleased to welcome Françoise to the NCC family. With her proven track record of leadership, vision and dedication, we are confident Françoise will drive our organization toward continued success. Her passion for nature and commitment to excellence align perfectly with our values. We look forward to the positive impact she will bring to our team and mission,” said Diane Griffin, the newly appointed chair of NCC’s Atlantic Regional Board. Griffin succeeds past board chair Ann Worth and brings years of experience working with non-profits and all levels of government, including serving as a senator for Prince Edward Island.

NCC works with partners and supporters to conserve important natural spaces throughout Atlantic Canada. Presently, the organization is raising funds for many initiatives, including:

  • Conserving additional lands on the Nova Scotia–New Brunswick border to expand the Chignecto Isthmus wildlife corridor.
  • Conserving additional lands in the Codroy Valley, an important bird area in southwestern Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Protecting essential old-growth forest, freshwater wetlands and coastal shorelines for the benefit of species at risk in Kespukwitk (Southwestern Nova Scotia).
  • Protecting coastal shorelines, forests and wetlands throughout Prince Edward Island.
  • Recruiting and training volunteer land stewards in communities to help care for our nature reserves.
  • Offering youth employment and mentorship opportunities through internship placements across all four Atlantic provinces.

 About

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the country’s unifying force for nature. We seek solutions to the twin crises of rapid biodiversity loss and climate change through large-scale, permanent land conservation. As a trusted partner, we work with people, communities, businesses and government to protect and care for our most important natural areas. Since 1962, we have brought Canadians together to conserve and restore more than 15 million hectares, including over 43,680 hectares in the Atlantic provinces.

NCC is a registered charity. With nature, we build a thriving world.
