Help protect nature close to home this holiday season
Nature Conservancy of Canada’s green gifts program is a win-win for all involved
Holiday shopping can be overwhelming, especially when trying to find the perfect gift. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is offering a meaningful alternative: the gift of nature. Returning for its 29th year, NCC’s green gifts program allows people to symbolically adopt Canada’s wildlife or treasured natural landscapes.
Participants can choose to symbolically adopt species such as snowy owl, Canada lynx, river otter, Atlantic puffin, Blanding’s turtle, grizzly bear, polar bear, monarch butterfly, swift fox or wolf. They can also support the conservation of landscapes in such regions as the Gaspé Peninsula, Great Lakes, Boreal Forest, West Coast, BC Interior, Canadian Rockies, Prairies and Parklands, East Coast, or Appalachian Mountains.
Funds raised through the green gifts program support NCC’s efforts to conserve forests, wetlands, grasslands and shorelines that are home to many species at risk. Since the program began, more than $3 million has been raised. Nature not only helps species but supports communities by providing flood mitigation, water filtration and carbon storage, countering the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss.
For over 60 years, NCC has safeguarded critical habitats for plants and animals, as well as over 15 million hectares of natural landscapes across Canada. More information about the green gifts program can be found at https://giving.natureconservancy.ca/.

“Green gifts are ideal for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts,” says Caroline Petit, Project manager at the NCC. “They’re also perfect for those on your list who seem to have everything or are difficult to shop for. This is an opportunity to give a gift that’s unique, memorable and impactful. We encourage people to consider a gift that protects nature so it can continue to do what it does best: care for us all and make all life on Earth possible. In the face of the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, a symbolic adoption is a powerful gesture, letting nature be part of the solution.”
Facts
- There are more than 190 species considered threatened or vulnerable on our lands in Quebec, including 14 on the list of 27 wildlife species newly protected by the Quebec government.
- Seventy per cent of Canada’s original wetlands have been lost to other uses. That number rises to over ninety per cent in southern Canada, where most people live.
- Gift recipients will receive a digital full-colour certificate, a digital landscape or species booklet and an informational video. Charitable tax receipts are issued for all green gifts program purchases.
