Plugs for the Prairie October 18, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm EDT
- This event has passed.
Historically, the Rice Lake Plains were covered with tall grass prairie and oak savanna ecosystems, which were dominated by massive black and white oak trees . Grasses like big bluestem and switchgrass thrived, and a diverse range of wildflowers blossomed. Help give this globally rare habitat a comeback by planting native prairie species plugs on our Hazel Bird Nature Reserve. After planting, join us on a guided walk to learn more about the Rice Lake Plains. Physical activity includes walking three to five kilometres over uneven terrain, as well as bending, digging and twisting.
The Hazel Bird Nature Reserve lies on the Oak Ridges Moraine, in Ontario’s Greenbelt. The event is one of many commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Greenbelt, and NCC acknowledges the support of the Greenbelt Foundation in helping make this event happen.
