Globally rare ecosystems, such as tall grass prairies and oak savanna, once covered the Rice Lake Plains. Seeding sites with tallgrass prairie plant species is an essential step in restoration. A recently restored field at the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC’s) Red Cloud School Road property features many of these tall grass wildflowers, including black-eyed Susan, wild bergamot, butterfly milkweed, tower mustard and showy tick-trefoil. During this event, volunteers will identify and collect seeds from these plants for NCC to use in our restoration efforts at other sites.

The Hazel Bird Nature Reserve/Red Cloud Nature Reserve lies on the Oak Ridges Moraine, in Ontario’s Greenbelt. The event is one of many commemorating the 20

Anniversary of the Greenbelt, and NCC acknowledges the support of the Greenbelt Foundation in helping make this event happen.

Physical activity includes walking over uneven terrain within in a three-hectare field. There will be some tall plants and vine plants to walk through. Repetitive movements include bending, reaching and picking seeds.
