
Prairie Harvest: Need For Seed

Globally rare ecosystems, such as tall grass prairies and oak savanna, once covered the Rice Lake Plains. Seeding sites with tallgrass prairie plant species is an essential step in restoration. A recently restored field at the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC’s) Red Cloud School Road property features many of these tall grass wildflowers, including black-eyed Susan, wild bergamot, butterfly milkweed, tower mustard and showy tick-trefoil. During this event, volunteers will identify and collect seeds from these plants for NCC to use in our restoration efforts at other sites.
The Hazel Bird Nature Reserve/Red Cloud Nature Reserve lies on the Oak Ridges Moraine, in Ontario’s Greenbelt. The event is one of many commemorating the 20

Physical activity includes walking over uneven terrain within in a three-hectare field. There will be some tall plants and vine plants to walk through. Repetitive movements include bending, reaching and picking seeds.

No previous experience is required. This event is suited for those aged 10 and older. This activity will proceed rain or shine, so please dress for the conditions: rubber boots, or shoes you don’t mind getting wet or dirty, long layers of comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting dirty, a hat and a change of dry clothes (just in case).
To allow us to plan for a safe, successful and enjoyable day in the field together, all participants must register in advance of the activity. As space is limited and spots fill up fast, register today to confirm your attendance.
