Building climate resilience
Priority 3
A proven climate solution
Forests, grasslands and wetlands store carbon, reduce flood and wildfire risks, and give wildlife room to adapt. By protecting and restoring these connected natural systems, we strengthen resilience for nature and people in a changing climate.
3.4 billion tonnes of carbon stored
The forests, grasslands and wetlands we conserve store nearly 3.4 billion tonnes of carbon, equal to 18 years of Canada’s current emissions.
1 million people benefit from flood protection
Every year, our projects help reduce flood risks to homes, infrastructure and communities for more than 1 million people.
How we build a more climate-resilient Canada
We build climate resilience by protecting landscapes that store carbon, absorb the impacts of extreme weather and give wildlife room to adapt. Together, these actions keep natural systems functioning through change.
Keeping carbon stored
Canada’s forests, peatlands and grasslands hold vast amounts of carbon accumulated over millennia. Protecting and restoring these ecosystems helps keep that carbon stored while sustaining the many benefits healthy landscapes provide.
Reducing climate risks
Wetlands, floodplains and forests absorb excess water, stabilize soil and moderate heat. Keeping these natural systems healthy reduces the impacts of floods, droughts and extreme weather on the wildlife and communities around them.
Room for wildlife to adapt
Climate change is altering the places wildlife depend on for food, shelter and reproduction. By protecting and connecting natural areas, we give species more room to move, adapt and survive as conditions change.
Accelerating climate and nature solutions
The Nature + Climate Projects Accelerator brings donors and corporate partners together to increase investment in conservation. It turns commitments to nature and climate into lasting results on the ground.
Conservation in action
Needs support now
Alberta’s Prairie Grasslands
Alberta is home to some of Canada’s last remaining prairie grasslands – one of the most endangered ecosystems on Earth. From the Southern Foothills to the Milk River Basin and beyond, we work alongside ranching families to conserve what remains of these vital landscapes, sustaining wildlife, supporting livelihoods and keeping Alberta’s grasslands healthy and resilient for generations to come.
AB Alberta
Boreal forests
Across northern Ontario, we’re protecting vast boreal forest and peatlands that are vital to our planet’s health. These powerful ecosystems store vast amounts of carbon, filter our drinking water and provide habitat for wildlife, while strengthening northern communities. Together, we can protect this remarkable landscape forever.
Buffalo Pound
Located northwest of Regina, the native grasslands surrounding Buffalo Pound Lake perform an essential job: filtering the drinking water relied on by about a quarter of Saskatchewan’s population. By conserving these endangered grasslands, we conserve clean water, support biodiversity and safeguard a landscape that communities rely on every day.
Bunchgrass Hills Conservation Area
South of Kamloops, Bunchgrass Hills protects one of BC’s rarest ecosystems. Grasslands make up only 1% of the province, yet they support more than 30% of its species at risk. Bunchgrass Hills anchors our work in the area, where we have conserved a network of more than 10,000 hectares of this vanishing prairie. Together, we can protect and connect more of this endangered ecosystem for the wildlife and people that depend on it.
Give today for a more resilient tomorrow.
