The Chignecto Isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting mainland Nova Scotia to New Brunswick and the rest of North America. For centuries, Mi’kmaq First Nations would gather here to meet and to hunt waterfowl, fish, moose, bear and porcupine.
An expanse of old forest, riverfront shoreline and freshwater wetlands has been purchased by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in southwestern Nova Scotia.
NCC’s Brier Island Nature Reserve protects over 400 hectares of habitat — that’s a quarter of the island — including habitat for endangered species.
The Port Joli coastal region features a shallow and sheltered ocean inlet, sandy beaches, mudflats, small islands and dunes.
The Musquodoboit River and Harbour boasts a complex system of coastal islands, salt marshes, mudflats, barrier beaches, bogs, barrens and coastal forest.
These feature projects are just a few of many conservation areas that NCC and our partners have secured in Nova Scotia.
