Natural Heritage Conservation Program
Since 2007, Canada’s Natural Heritage Conservation Program (NHCP) has rallied public and private partners around the understanding that investing in nature conservation helps secure a prosperous world for us all.
As of 2025, the NHCP has:
- Unlocked more than $1 billion in additional investment.
- Secured more than 2,200 conservation projects in more than 350 communities.
- Conserved more than 860,000 hectares — a pace of nearly 900 hockey rinks conserved every day since 2007.
How it works
First launched as the Natural Areas Conservation Program, the NHCP partnership is a model of collaborative conservation. The program is delivered by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), Ducks Unlimited Canada and Wildlife Habitat Canada, in collaboration with the country’s local and regional land trusts.
NCC and our program partners leverage federal government funding to raise matching contributions from landowners, businesses, companies, foundations, individuals and other levels of government to amplify Canada’s investment in nature.
By protecting the ecological foundations of our economies, communities and well-being, the NHCP helps NCC and its partners fulfill a responsibility we owe to nature, to each other and to future generations.
